Parents Self-Help Group Model
About Donation
The Parents Self-Help Groups model is about parents of children with intellectual disabilities coming together to share experiences, difficulties and successes. Most parents know better their children’s needs and interests and so help them to convey their message. Parents need to be strong to be able to take care of their children. When parents are empowered, it is then that their children have possibilities. If parents within the group are financially sound, groups must engage in income generating activities that will yield returns. These micro enterprises project may include:
- Animal production (e.g. rabbit, snail, goat & sheep rearing)
- Crop production (e.g. mushroom, pepper, ginger & maize farming, production of palm kernel oil, nursing cocoa seedlings)
A parent can only help a child when they themselves are strong. Inclusion Ghana supports these parents through micro enterprise projects:
The needs of parents within the groups are enormous and meeting them will require that steps are taken to make members financially stable. In order to ensure that:
- Textile production (batik, tie & dye)
- Dress making
- Soap making
- Leather works & weaving
- Bead making
In addition, the parents are given training in resource mobilization and financial literacy to better manage these micro enterprise projects.
